The Art of Living Deliciously

4 January 2018

January is a month of resolutions, new beginnings and positive commitments. And of all the passions in which your New Year’s efforts could be invested, there are few which repay you quite so bountifully as cooking. Learning to cook new things lays the foundations for a lifetime of shared experiences for you, your family and your friends.

New Cookery School courses

In 2018, we’re hoping to share our passion for proper cooking with more people than ever before. We’ve created a new set of Cookery School courses which pack a pair of fantastic recipes – and lunch with wine – into a slightly shorter day than our full courses. Liven up your lemon drizzle skills with Bake it Beautiful, learn the secrets of our Swiss Muesli Bread with Knead to Know or explore slow cooked pork belly on our Just Cook course.

And if you’ve ever wished you could replicate our much-loved potato rösti at home, our new single recipe courses will teach you everything you need to know. These three-hour sessions focus on a single dish, and they launch with Make a Bettys Swiss Rösti in April.

Ask our Tutors

Of course, a trip to our Cookery School isn’t simply about cooking. It’s an experience to remember - you’ll enjoy the same warmth and hospitality that our Café Tea Rooms are famous for. For a taster, our Cookery School tutors will be visiting all our branches for demonstration days throughout January. You can pop along and ask them cooking questions between 10am and 3pm on the following days: Harrogate (Wed 10th Jan & Fri 26th Jan), Ilkley (Thu 11th Jan & Sat 20th Jan), Northallerton (Thu 18th Jan), Harlow Carr (Fri 19th Jan), and York (Tue 30th Jan & Thu 1st Feb).

Reward yourself

For many, this time of year is about indulging less – but we don’t feel that the path to happiness needs to be all about self-denial. For us, it’s a time to think about indulging better. Rather than completely avoiding the things you love, we believe that balance means making sure those experiences, when they happen, are truly special.

Take our Afternoon Tea, for example - a treat so special, you’ll remember it forever. It’s served all day, every day in our six Café Tea Rooms. Or you can book the very height of loveliness, our luxury Lady Betty Afternoon Tea, available in York and Harrogate. Reward yourself for a month of good behaviour by choosing a treat that really counts, and you’ll be well on the way to living life a little more deliciously.

January joys

And if you need a few more peaks to balance out those January valleys, we’d recommend our fabulous Fondant Fancies – not an everyday treat, perhaps, but one which is guaranteed to make this day special. Our Macaroons, meanwhile, are the perfect way to add a delicious splash of colour to a wintry month, and our moreish Yorkshire Tea Loaf is a simply unbeatable pick-me-up for chilly afternoons.

If those still sound a touch too indulgent, well, we have you covered. There’s a treat you can enjoy many times a day, yet it’s as light as a feather. A cup of our celebrated Tea Room Blend is the ticket to a wide smile and a warm heart, every time you boil the kettle. Or dive into the fascinating depths of single origin coffee, sourced from the finest growers around the world and roasted in Harrogate.

Life is always lovelier when there's a delicious little luxury to look forward to. With help from us, you can set 2018 on the perfect path.
